What is the function of laminated glass?

Laminated glass
Laminated glass is made by bonding two or more layers of glass together with an interlayer film, forming a single piece of glass. This single piece can be used on its own — for example, stair railings and glass balustrades are common in daily life — or it can be combined with other glass, such as the laminated insulating glass commonly used in windows. This involves combining a laminated glass unit with a single layer of glass to create a laminated insulated unit. Multiple layers can also be laminated together; for instance, the glass used in Apple stores and even bulletproof glass is produced using this process. The manufacturing method involves placing the interlayer film between two pieces of glass, heating it with a machine, and then applying heat and pressure in an autoclave. The film melts, and the glass bonds firmly to the film. Once completed, laminated glass offers high strength, elasticity, and penetration resistance. It can withstand tremendous impact forces. When the glass breaks, the interlayer film holds the fragments firmly in place, preventing them from scattering, thereby reducing accidents or injuries and improving overall safety. Therefore, like tempered glass, laminated glass is classified as a type of safety glass.

Broken laminated glass
In addition to safety, laminated glass has several special features. For example, sound insulation: while insulating glass cannot effectively block low-to-medium frequency noise — such as road tire noise or train sounds — laminated glass handles these very well. This is because the interlayer film dampens and buffers glass vibrations, blocking noise transmission, especially low-to-medium frequency noise. The more layers of film, the better the sound insulation. The noise reduction capability of laminated glass depends on the thickness and elasticity of the interlayer; theoretically, the thicker the film, the better the sound insulation.
Laminated glass also provides UV protection. The interlayer film absorbs ultraviolet radiation. If you have expensive furniture, carpets, or artwork at home, using laminated glass is highly beneficial, as it prevents fading and aging caused by UV exposure.
Furthermore, laminated glass offers thermal insulation. When sunlight directly hits a piece of laminated glass, the interlayer film absorbs part of the heat, allowing only a portion to pass into the room. This helps maintain indoor temperature and reduces air conditioning energy consumption.
