How Many Types of Fireproof Glass?
I.Overview
There are five main types of fire-resistant glass: laminated composite fire-resistant glass, wired fire-resistant glass, special fire-resistant glass, insulating fire-resistant glass, and high-strength monolithic cesium-potassium fire-resistant glass.
II. Classification
1. Classification by Product Type
Fire-resistant glass is a special type of glass that can maintain its integrity in specified fire resistance tests. It is categorized into three types based on product variety:
- Type A
Fire-resistant glass that meets both the requirements of fire integrity and fire insulation. It includes two subtypes: composite fire-resistant glass and poured fire-resistant glass. Featuring light transmission, fire resistance (smoke insulation, flame insulation, and thermal radiation shielding), sound insulation, and impact resistance, this type of glass is suitable for fire-rated doors and windows (steel or wooden) for architectural decoration, transoms, partition walls, skylights, smoke barriers, transparent floors, and other building components that require both transparency and fire resistance.
- Type B
Fire-resistant glass that meets both the requirements of fire integrity and thermal radiation intensity. Mostly composite fire-resistant glass, it is characterized by light transmission, fire resistance, and smoke insulation.
- Type C
Monolithic fire-resistant glass that only meets the requirement of fire integrity. With properties of light transmission, fire resistance, smoke insulation, and high strength, it is applicable to fire-resistant glass partition walls, fire windows, and exterior curtain walls where thermal insulation is not required.
2.Classification by Structural Type
Fire-resistant glass is divided into fire-resistant laminated glass, thin-coated fire-resistant glass, monolithic fire-resistant glass, and fire-resistant wired glass. Among these, fire-resistant laminated glass can be further classified into composite fire-resistant glass and poured fire-resistant glass based on production process characteristics.
3.Classification by Fire Resistance Limit
It is graded into five classes according to fire resistance limit: 0.5h, 1h, 1.5h, 2h, and 3h.
4.Classification by Fire Performance
It is classified into insulating fire-resistant glass (Type A) and non-insulating fire-resistant glass (Type C).
5.Classification by Structure
Fire-resistant glass is divided into composite fire-resistant glass (including poured type and laminated type; poured fire-resistant glass offers excellent thermal insulation performance, while laminated fire-resistant glass excels in fire resistance) and monolithic fire-resistant glass.
- Laminated Type
It is composed of two or more glass original sheets bonded with one or more interlayers of water-soluble inorganic fire-resistant adhesive.
--Fire Resistance Principle: In case of fire, the fire-facing glass will crack quickly when exposed to high temperatures. Subsequently, the fire-resistant adhesive interlayer foams and expands by about ten times, forming a rigid, milky white cellular fire-resistant adhesive board that effectively blocks flames, isolates high temperatures, and prevents the spread of harmful gases. The finished products can be edge-ground, drilled, and cut to size.
--Application Notes: When applied to exterior windows and exterior curtain walls, the design scheme should consider combining fire-resistant glass with PVB laminated glass. Scope of Application: Fire-rated doors and windows for building rooms, corridors, and passageways, as well as fire-resistant partition walls for fire compartments and key areas.
- Monolithic Type
Monolithic fire-resistant glass features a single-layer glass structure. It can maintain fire integrity for a certain period, block open flames and toxic, harmful gases from the fire-facing side, but does not have thermal insulation performance.
--Scope of Application: Exterior curtain walls, exterior windows, skylights, smoke barriers, frameless fire-resistant glass doors, and partition walls without thermal insulation requirements.
- Poured Type
It consists of two original glass sheets (three sheets can be used for special requirements), sealed around the edges with special flame-retardant adhesive strips. The gap between the sheets is filled with fire-resistant adhesive liquid, which solidifies into a transparent gel and bonds integrally with the glass.
--Fire Resistance Principle: When exposed to high temperatures, the transparent gel-like fire-resistant adhesive layer between the glass sheets quickly hardens to form an opaque fire and heat insulation board. It not only prevents the spread of flames but also blocks the conduction of high temperatures to the non-fire-facing side. This type of fire-resistant glass not only has fire and heat insulation performance but also offers excellent sound insulation. It can be processed into curved shapes.
--Scope of Application: Fire-rated doors and windows, building patios, atriums, shared spaces, and fire-resistant partition walls for computer rooms.
--Important Notes: The black sealing frame is visible around the glass, making it suitable for installation with surrounding pressing strips. When used for unshaded exterior windows facing due south or west, consult the manufacturer in advance for reasonable suggestions.
- New-Type
Fire-Resistant Glass Borosilicate Fire-Resistant Glass: With low thermal expansion coefficient and good thermal shock resistance, borosilicate glass is a widely used type of fire-resistant glass. The typical chemical composition of borosilicate fire-resistant glass is as follows: SiO₂ content 68%–78%, B₂O₃ content 10%–13%, Al₂O₃ content 2%–4%, and R₂O content 4%–8%.
